Jay Vilardi’s axe of choice is his custom Delgada. The
guitar, built from mahogany with a quilted maple top, features a deep vintage
sunburst finish, but goes au naturale on the back and sides. The figured maple
contrasts beautifully with the smooth, clean look of the inlay-free ebony
fretboard and black six-in-line headstock, but the aesthetics of the guitar
will only get him so far. Vilardi went with a vintage tremolo and the
powerhouse pickup combination of a Seymour Duncan JB (bridge) and 59
(neck)—wired to just a volume knob and selector switch—to get all the smooth,
crispy leads and skull-crushing riffs that his music calls for.
