In November, The Fray brought their melodic pop-rock to First Act Guitar Studio to play for an enthusiastic, fan-packed house. Hailing from Denver, CO, the foursome has a Top 10 AAA radio hit with the song “Over My Head”. The Fray has been on tour with Ben Folds in support of their new release, How to Save a Life (Epic). We sat down with Joe King (singer, guitarist) and Ben Wysocki (drummer) to talk about life on the road:
FA: What’s the best thing about being in a band?
Ben: I just think it’s cool, playing and people listening to our music. (laughs) You kind of get used to just doing it for yourself. And it’s really cool now, that people are listening to our music. It’s cool to think our CD’s in stores all over the country, and you can listen to our music.
FA: That’s powerful.
Ben: It’s a simple thing, but it’s a brand new concept to us. Touring is really tough, but in retrospect it’s just cool to travel with your friends.
Joe: We’re driving to Nashville tonight.

FA: So if some kid came up to you, and said “I’m learning to play an instrument” would you have some advice for them?
Joe: As a guitar player and songwriter, I wish I would have taken music theory classes. A lot of it’s just by ear, what I play, I just figure it out. So, having that foundation, I would recommend that.
Ben: It’s interesting you ask that. We played a show at a college, in upstate New York, and this kid came up to me and said, 'we’re just starting a band, you know, what should I do?’ I told him just work as hard as you can at it. If you’re gonna do it, do it. Just put everything that you have into it, and make it more than a hobby. Be serious about it. It pays off, when you get so much better, when you work at it.
