First Act Congratulates 2009 Heifetz Scholarship Winners

Musicians Attend International Music Institute

Five young musicians have received First Act scholarships to attend the Heifetz Music Institute Summer Program in Wolfeboro, NH. Since 2003, First Act has provided summer scholarships for exceptional young musicians from around the world.

The Heifetz International Music Institute is an intensive six-week musical program for advanced students of violin, viola, cello, and piano. Students participate in a rigorous schedule of lessons, practice, solo performance, and chamber music.

Together, First Act and Heifetz are dedicated to inspiring and enabling young people to experience the joy of making music. All attendees and scholarship candidates are selected by the Heifetz International Music Institute.

Dmitry Volkov, cello

Dmitry Volkov returned for a second summer at Heifetz. Volkov, a twenty-one-year-old cellist, was born in Togliatti, Russia. He began playing cello at the age of 6. From 2002 to 2006, Dmitry studied at The Moscow Tchaikovsky Music College. In 2006 Dmitry began studying at The Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with Professor N. Shakhovskaya. Dmitry has had wide experience performing, including appearances as a soloist with chamber and symphony orchestras, attending master-classes, and performing in Russia and abroad. He has participated in various music festivals in China, Spain, France, Finland, Italy, and Tunisia. Dmitry has received grants and scholarships and has won a number of prizes, including the grand prize at the regional competitions, Young Musician-Virtuoso and Assemblies of Arts.


Anna Panina, violin

Anna Panina was born in 1987, in Ryazan, a province of the Russian Federation. She began her musical studies of the violin at the age of four with V.F. Bobylev. At the age of nine, Anna became a Laureate of the Shostakovich International Music Competition, in Hanover, Germany. Three years later, Anna won a prize in the Andrea Postaccini International Competition, in Fermo, Italy. At the age of 16, Anna began her music studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Music College with Professor M.S. Alezarova.
Currently, Anna is a student at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Her success in competition continues to bring recognition to her as a young musician. In 2008, Anna won First Prize in the Third Beethoven Festival International Competition, in Austria and she was the Grand Prix Winner of the Moscow International Competition. Additionally, Anna has received several scholarships, including those from the Russian Federation Ministry of Culture; the International Beneficiary Fund of the Vladimir Spivakov Foundation; and the New Names Fund of the Russian Performing Arts Foundation.

 

Ekaterina Tarasova, violin

Ekaterina Tarasova was born in Moscow in 1985. She began learning to play violin at the age of seven. Currently, Ekaterina studies at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, where she is a student of A. Kushner.

 Ekaterina has performed in solo recitals and concerto performances, and is an experienced chamber musician as well. Ekaterina is a veteran of international music festivals and master class, and she holds several prominent prizes from competitions throughout the Russian Federation.
In 2004, Ekaterina was the Second Prize Winner in the Volgograd Symphony Orchestra International Competition. Two years later, she was awarded Third Prize in the Classical Heritage International Competition in Moscow. She received First Prize of the International Competition in Astana. Based on rank and achievement in this competition, she awarded a Performance Diploma and the competition’s Special Prize. She was Laureate and Grand Prix Winner of the Open International Competition of Stringed Bow Instruments, in Kiev.
Ekaterina is the recipient of scholarships from the New Names Foundation and the K. Orbelian Foundation.

 

Yunjin Ro, cello

Yunjin Ro started cello at the age of seven. She graduated from Yewon Arts School, Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University with top honors in Seoul, South Korea.  She has received the first prize in the Music Journal Competition, Chosun Korea Times Music Competition, Ehwa Korea Times Music Competition, Strad Music Journal Competition, Kyung-won University Competition, Pusan MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation) Competition, Sungjung Competition and Baroque Chamber Competition. She also has been selected as a recipient of Kumho Culture Foundation and had two recitals at Kumho Art Hall. She performed with Seoul Arts High School Orchestra, Seoul National University Orchestra, Seoul Symphony Orchestra, KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) Symphony Orchestra, Pusan Symphony Orchestra. She is currently studying at Peabody Conservatory of Music as a Master of Music student under the tutelage of professor Amit Peled.


Evgeny Volkov, cello

Evgeny Volkov started his musical studies at the age of 8, at the Central Music School No.4, in Togliatti, Russia, with Tatiana Likhanova. In 2006, he received a Diploma with the highest marks. Thereafter, he entered his first year of study at the Moscow Academic Junior Music College in association with Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Currently, he studies with Associate Professor Olga Galochkina.
At age 19, Evgeny is a Laureate of national and international competitions, and has performed in many music festivals. He was the First Prize Winner of the Young Artists’ Assembly in Russia and the Grand Prize Winner of the Young Virtuosi and the Nashy Nadezhdy Competition. He was the First Prize Winner in the Lagovskioi Competition for Young Musicians, as well as the First Prize Winner of the Fourth Open International Competition, in Nizhny Novgorod.
 The New Names Fund has recognized Evgeny as an up and coming young artist. He has received scholarships from the Russian Ministry of Culture; the City Administration of Togliatti; the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation; Conoco Phillips; and the Foundation for Russian Musical Art of the 21st Century.
